DOLL: Firestar x 2

Classic Firestar Doll
Sketch is pencil,
Final is watercolor & india ink

This was a fun little exercise.  I originally did the two Firestar images as a thank-you to a fellow DeviantArtist.  I'm not overly familiar with the character, being a DC Comics girl (the only Marvel I'm overly familiar with is X-Men & I haven't followed that for almost 2 decades), but I love her design :)

The sketches are really indicative of how I draw.  Usually a finished piece starts out as some little doodle in my sketchbook.  After a few size changes with the photocopier, I trace the image using a lightboard (read: a window that the sun is shining through) onto watercolor paper.  Any final changes to the design happen at this stage.  For complex works, it is not unusual that I sketch individual aspects on different pieces of paper.  It's not the easiest way, but it works for me :)

And this would be the second doll I did as a thank-you.  Why two?  Because I couldn't decide which costume I wanted to do, simple as that :)

India ink with watercolor highlights

Here is another OC of mine from a story called "The Sovereign".  Essentially, she is a Dragon Priestess who is capable of wielding liquid dragon fire.  Needless to say, it is definitely a sword & sorcery type of tale.  This particular project is on the back burner, unfortunately,  but I still find myself doodling a sketch of Maynke every now & again :)

Speaking of sketches, that is what this one started off as: a 2" x 3" little sketch.  I used a photocopier to enlarge the image to fit a 9" x 12" paper & used the pencil lines a little differently than normal, resulting in a more sleek look to the hair.  Please note that the image is cut off at the top & bottom, and some of the jagged/broken lines are due to using a 300dpi scanner :(

PLEASE NOTE: This is more anime-style than it is my regular style.  The two tend to merge, even when I don't want them to :/

The disclaimer:  All copyrights to Maynke & to the above image are mine :)

DOLL: Supergirl

Supergirl (Doll style)
Watercolor & india ink

Here we have an exercise that I rattled off in a night.  Please note the saturation of the colors is a tad too intense - I tried to scan the image several times, but this is the only one where the lines came out really crisp & not blurry.  It's either time for a new scanner or time to properly learn how to use one :)

This Supergirl art is based on the costume design by Michael Turner.  We miss ya, Michael!

The disclaimer:  Supergirl is © DC Comics - though I have no idea if she will revert to the creator's heirs like Superman in 2013.   Guess I have something to look into :)   <---UPDATE!  So I looked into it & it looks like the heirs shot themselves in the foot with some agreement they signed in 1992.  Lots of appeals, lots of lawyers, etc, etc - this'll be resolved in, what, the year 2095?

Pencil sketchbook entry

Back in the day, I used to frequent a local pub & always had my sketchbook on hand.  People looked at me funny but I managed to get a LOT of work done there.  Gotta love any place that will allow you to set up a full set of watercolors & india inks in their establishment.  This drawing is one of the many I managed to get done there.  Kameko is a character from a story of mine called 'Haven' - it's pretty well an ongoing tale that I hope to finish before I shuffle off this mortal coil.  Place your bets.

For the record, she does have 3 eyes - I just got lazy with drawing the last one.  The technique for drawing hair is one I seldom use anymore & I think I should maybe revisit it again.  It's time consuming but makes for easy detail :)

The disclaimer: Kameko is copyright protected.  She's all mine, baby!

Lady Turquoise of Gemworld

Lady Turquoise of Gemworld - Spell Casting
Watercolors & acrylic-based india ink

This painting was based on the last sketch I drew while my mother was still alive.  As I knelt over her grave, my right hand resting on her coffin, I vowed to continue with my work & to dedicate all of my art to her as she was both my biggest fan and harshest critic.  I hope she would have been proud of it.

The disclaimer: Lady Turquoise & Gemworld are both © DC Comics.  She was created by Gary Cohn, Dan Mishkin & Ernie Colon.  The above art is a fan work by yours truly :)

HOLY S**T! I have a blog!

Hey, all, and welcome to my spifftacular new blog.  It's my first one so expect a little clunkiness until I figure out how this thing works :)

In the coming months, I hope to share some of my artwork, thoughts & random stuff that tickles/torments my fancy.  All comments are welcome* & encouraged as I look forward to hearing from whoever happens to stop by.  Cheers, all!

A little about me: I am a 33 year old Canadian woman who enjoys comic books, original illustration art, all things Halloween & creating my own stories & characters.  I am a devout fan of Amethyst, an old comic book published by DC (it's getting a reboot next month!  Yeah, baby!) & I have an extensive collection of original art from that series on  I also strongly believe in artist's rights & this will be evident in a few of the future posts (especially when I'm p*ssed right off!)

The entries will be divided into the following categories:
FROM THE VAULT: older art from over 10 years ago (as of posting date).
SKETCH: For those works worthy to share but won't likely make it to a finalized stage.
WIP (Work In Progress)/PROGRESSION: This is where I will update works as they advance further along.
(NAME OF CHARACTER): These entries are what I would call my "regular" style.  This is where many of my completed works will appear (pencil, paint or otherwise)
DOLL: A stylized form of drawing characters in a vaguely-super-deformed way.  Kind of.  Not really...
CHIBI: Having been into anime for YEARS for a while there, I came to appreciate the ultimate super-deformed style of drawing & it's insanely fun!
HALLOWEEN: 'Cos I make a LOT of Halloween stuff for my own displays & for my best friend's cemetery display.
RANT: Things that are REALLY angering me/stuff I feel strongly about.

Stay tuned, more to come :)
